Project 2: Sustainable Product Service Systems - Redesigning the Toilet

‘THE BIG IDEA’ RATIONALE

The brief I have chosen to answer is ‘re-inventing the toilet’; my design is focusing on improving current squat style toilets used in refugee and aid camps.

The current product used by OXFAM is a plastic slab measuring 800 x 1000mm, I have redesigned this slab to incorporate an automatic lid mechanism that allows the pit latrine to be covered when not in use to prevent flies but also a hands free system to lift the lid when in use and place it back down once the user is finished.
By keeping the flies to a minimum and reducing the amount of physical contact with the unit the chance of spreading illness and disease can hopefully be limited or reduced.
The new product is designed to be used in situations where a quick solution is required, this would not be a long term solution but one that is ideal for setting up directly after an incident to allow safe sanitation be given to those who need it most. This product would be stored at large warehouses and when required would be delivered by emergency airdrop, they could also be located in collection depots in major cities for an even quicker response when there is an emergency or disaster. The new design is 1000mm x 1200mm and fits on a North American sized pallet with 20 fitting in a 40ft-shipping container.

  1. Doug, very interesting idea. This works very well with you clearly stating the need for it, Your concepts renders and intricate detail has really shown that you have thought out the idea and makes it more convincing to a potential client. The only thing i see it missing is development, i can't exactly see how you gradually got to this specific concept, the process or you're previous prototypes. That being said still a very good design, although i would not use myself i can definitely see a product like this showing much potential.

  2. bloody good rendaz mate, although dont you think that it could be too powerfull and shoot the lid off? i think it should be white as well.

  3. Really cool idea mate. its modular design works well with transporting and such due to its actual area. renders are near perfect as usual with detailed technical drawings given the lack of time still. maybe the mechanism trigger could have been a bit smaller, in the sense that what if someone accidentally stood on it, may cause some trouble! good job though.

  4. An outstanding design as always. Your posters were clear in terms of identifying what the problem is and how you specified your creative design solution. A little improvement by making the hole a little bit bigger. Seems like the users need to be in the exact position every time and carefully aim for the hole. But overall, an excellent innovative design for a cheap, portable refugee toilet

  5. Great solution, the fact that they are so flat is highly beneficial for transport.

The hole is quite small and as Jan mentioned above requires precise positioning. How are they cleaned and who maintains them? If the lid is made from a metal, can't quite tell from the posters, this could be stolen and sold for money.
